settings for multiformat : hdv and h.264
on May 20, 2011 at 11:52:07 am

Hello
I am junior FCP editor.
I've to edit a clip with two different kind of footages: hdv from a sony z1 and h.264 from 5d mark2.
The clip is going to be 720p.
I would like to know what is the best settings.
Should i convert all to pro res?
Or only the footages from 5d mark2?

Many thanks!

Convert just the H264 and edit on a Prores sequence.
You must pay attention to the time-base of the footage.

Dear sir
thanks for the answer, I got more ifos about the work i've to do.
This is the infos:
Apple HDV 1080p25, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions
16-bit Entier (Petit Boutien), Gauche, 48,000 Khz
IPS = 25

H.264, 1920 x 1080, Millions
16-bit Entier (Petit Boutien), Stéréo (G D), 48,000 Khz
IPS : 25
And the company want a movie 720 p
I've got few more questions,

Did i make a conversion only for H.264, like you say, and what about the pixel aspects ratio
( did i make a conversion? )
Can i make some post production, some images are green, and i've to calibrate it?

Thanks for your reply.

Mr.
I need more information, and also a little explanation.
Would you say that each footage has its own code?
In addition, I just do the conversion, it seems that the file has H.264 square pixels, while the hdv by definition has a ratio of 1,333.
However, I must confess that I do not see the difference, would I have worries then?
Thank you consider my concerns, I would do this job the best way

Hi Tromben,
Transcode the H264 to Prores, keeping the rest of the settings (size, fps, field order..).
Conform a sequence to the Prores footage and edit the HDV stuff together.
Set "Render in High Precision" and "Render Motion Effects: BEST".

You're the man...gracias.
In summary
IF I understand correctly, I place the ProRes of H264 on the timeline so that the sequence is identical to ProRes from the H.264. And on it, I put the sources of HDV.
Thank you very much, I export to finish, 720 p.
Even if the client wants this codec, while others told me about the issues regarding the latter has to make a dvd.
For that I would prepare myself for another application, another codec. And your method allows.
I think your method is best.
