avc1 CODEC

This isn't really a FCP question, but I didn't know where to post it. I just received a quicktime (.mov) file encoded with the avc1 CODEC. I need to convert it to an editable format and to do so need a CODEC that will allow MPEG Streamclip to read it. I can open it in VLC (which is how I know what CODEC is has), but the export wizard from there is horrendous. I'm on a mac, obviously.

Thanks in advance for any help!

-Dusty

Just googling "mac avc1 codec" finds a couple of sources, e.g., http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23875/avc1decoder/

Hi Justin,
Install Perian (http://www.perian.org).
Will help you to open many different kind of files.

I have Perian and tried installing the avc1 codec from your google search. Neither works.

Nothing. Quicktime will not open the file.

[Dusty Deen] "Nothing. Quicktime will not open the file."
Any warning from QT when fails open the file?

That may not be a QT file.
If was just a missing codec, normally QT would open the file and probably would show a full white screen a a warning about the missed component. Normally would play the audio too unless would miss the audio component too.
The ".mov" extension means nothing. You should ask the people that sent you the files.

Was anyone able to find a solution here? I'm experiencing the same issue.

I downloaded an AVC1 MPEG-4 clip from Shutterstock but can't figure out a way to convert it to ProRes 422 to work in FCP. I've tried Compressor and MPEG Streamclip, but neither seem to work.

The clip plays in VCL but I only get black when I open with QT.

I've heard QT Pro 7 or Bigasoft might work, but I would prefer to do this for free if possible.

Thanks for the help!
