best archieve format for HD and SD

What is the best HD video format or SD video format for archieving?The videos will be used in the different video edit programs(Edius,final cut etc.).What do you recommend?

Best format? The raw format it was captured/created in.

Need more details to give you a more detailed answer; particularly WHICH SD formats and WHICH HD formats. Are you talking the finished sequences or the raw clips?

HOW LONG does this need to be archived? A year or two? Are you archiving to preserve if for the ages?

If the answer is "forever", I'd be tempted to keep it in the most technologically-stable state possible... which means you don't archive as a Quicktime Movie! Archive the shots as PNG sequences. They're lossless, they can have up to a 32-bit color depth (including alpha channels) and the format isn't going to go away. Codecs come and go.

It's a time-consuming pain in the neck to convert them into editing codecs for those various NLE's -- and whatever Newest And Best Editing Application is developed in the future -- but it can be done.

And the storage capacity required is mind-boggling.
But then, you DID use the word "best".
