Exporting media

I seriously need a class/training in exporting media for the appropriate viewing medium. I am self taught and do ok but I run into issues that eat more time than I think is necessary. For example, we produce a commercial and will upload to a station- what's the best format/way to go? ProRes? H.264? Are there accepted standards? This is what I need to learn.

Any suggestions?

Wade, you'll need to ask the station what format they would like and that is what you provide.

Mac Pro 2.26GHz 8 Core
16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Final Cut Studio 3
Adobe CS5 Master Suite
Panasonic HVX-200
Canon 7D

Check my sig line: I WORK at a TV station.
When local stations are involved, you need to CALL. Ask for the Chief Engineer. Ask him or her what they want for delivery. Ask for delivery specs,

HD: Horizontal & vertical resolution.
SD: Same thing.
Audio: Sample rate (e.g. 44.1 kHz, 48 kH), sample bits (e.g. 16, 24), stereo/mono.
Delivery codec
HD video on an SD channel: Letter boxed or Center punched?

That ought to help.
