How can I Export AVCHD files for vimeo as fast as possible?
on Apr 28, 2011 at 6:06:32 pm

Hi all,

Recently a client asked if i could import a ton of clips from his shiny new camcorder. He wants a simple Title added at the start of each clip (no problems with this) and then have the clips exported into files ready for his website, I usually use the settings vimeo recommend for DV and they are fine in terms of quality for him. No problem i said, so I took the camcorder home. I captured the AVCHD (MTS Files) footage using Log and transfer and I knew in advance this would take a little time. I used Pro Res 422 codec. So I took the first of the new MOV files onto the timeline, its about 8mins 50secs long. I added the title at the start - 6 secs extra.

Now the trouble starts...

Using export settings for Quicktime - H264, FCP 7 is taking an hour to export roughly 10 mins of unedited footage (excluding the title i know).

I dont want to walk from the job because of the time it will take (about 20-30 clips, most around 10 mins but some as long as 30 so it could be over 50 hours of exporting)

The machine I have isn't the fastest but i really thought it would do better than those speeds.

MacBook Pro 13, April 2010 model, OSX 10.6.7, 2.4Ghz Core2Duo, 4GB RAM

Any help or advice for me to speed up what should be an easy and speedy process would be greatly obliged!

Export a self contained file first using Export>>QT Movie, then use Compressor to make your h.264 encodes. It's much quicker and you can do a batch render easily, especially if you setup a Compressor droplet.

CompressHD if you have a MacPro Tower:

Or Matrox MXO2 Mini with MAX

Dang it, Shane beat me to it. Get the Elgato piece, the hardware, not the software only version. It offloads some of the process and creates great looking Vimeo ready h.264 files very quickly. I couldn't survive without one.

Hi guys, thank you all for your helpful comments and especially the speed with which you replied. I'm gonna try the quicktime and compressor method first, failing that, the Elgato sounds likes it's worth the investment.

Cheers
