Beware problems with EOS E1 Plug-in
on Apr 24, 2011 at 6:17:41 am

FYI - I have been using the Canon EOS E1 Plug-in to log and transfer clips from a DSLR. I began to notice that my new Pro-res clips were shorter than the originals. In fact, the plug-in had clipped quite a few of them.

Now I'm going to have to go back and look through my entire database of clips, comparing the duration of the originals to the converted files.

It seems I'm not the only one with this issue:

If you use the EOS E1 Plug-in, beware! I think I'll be switching back to Mpeg Streamclip from now on.

Jason

What was your experience - how much did it cut from each clip? I'm assuming these were clips from your 7D, yes?

The mistakes were all over the board. This is why it's such a horrible problem. Anything from 10% - 90% of the clip could be missing. I've probably logged 500 clips using the plug-in and will now need to go back to compare them all.

According to some reports, the problem is due to trying to use FCP during the transferring process. Perhaps it overloads the processor? Whatever the cause, I'm going to err on the safe side and avoid the software altogether until they get this bug fixed.

And yes, these were 7D clips. Not that that matters -- you'd get the same results from another camera.

I had this problem when I first installed the EOS E1 plug in. I found it stopped if I left FCP alone to do the import and not edit or preview clips as they came in. Have not had the issue since.

Is this news? Probably not, but maybe a timely reminder.
Canon are releasing a new version of the EOS E1 plug-in tomorrow (25th April 2011) - version 1.2. May or may not address your issues?

Gah! There you go, my bad, its been available since the 15th, thought it was something all new ... apologies if it was a false alarm:

I've been using the new version. After going through my drives, I've discovered that the problem has happened with both the 1st version and the newer version of the software.

Thanks for the quick clarification Jason, good (if disappointing) to know.

Andy, I think you were right the first time.

Your second link is not the new FCP EOS plugin...it is for other software related to the Canon cameras. That apparently does come out on the 25th (tomorrow).

John, I made the same mistake. The new version IS there. You just need to select "MAC OSX" and you will see the download for that file.

The problem with incomplete clips has been reported here afew times and it is as Phil says, a product of using FCP whilst ingesting. Like Log & Capture, it is best to just leave the computer alone whilst ingesting. Kind of annoying ofr a file based system but hopefully all that changes in a few months with X

Yep, I had this issue and found that if you leave the system to get on while it ingest then you're fine.

I still prefer Log and Capture as it is the only way you can add Reel Names and Timecode to your clips.

Gary - "I still prefer Log and Capture as it is the only way you can add Reel Names and Timecode to your clips."

Gary, unless Ive misunderstood your last post, you do know that the EOS Log and Transfer plugin allows you to add both reel name and TC to your clip when injestting, right? Its the only 5D/7D workflow that does this to my knowledge.

Do you know that if you do ANYTHING inside while Log and Transfer is working...such as start naming clips, or looking at footage, that L&T pauses the transfer process? So if you do this enough, the pausing might just cause the clip to stop transferring...thus cutting it short.

Try the L&T process but leaving the machine alone while it does it...see what happens.
