"Glitchy" motion on HDV presentation
on Apr 20, 2011 at 2:11:32 am

I'm working on a (mostly) handheld documentary shot in HDV 1080i60.

I've finished in FCP.

But, if I monitor this output via my Blackmagic card via HDMI monitor, it all looks fine. My guess is that my previous workflow, outputting this project to HDV tape and playing back via Component, will also work fine.

But, I'd like to play back via laptop. Just seems a pain to go to tape these days.

What's the best way to create a good looking file?

I've created an FCP reference movie. I've also created an HDV 1080i60 file via Compressor. All iterations show slightly herky-jerky, digital hesitation, say, as a camera pans down a sheer rock face. (Remember, shot hand-held.) It's slight, but it's annoying.

Is this just because I'm using a computer display - and not "video" - as my source? Is there a solution?

Thanks,
Pete

I bet it's because you made the mistake of keeping your video in its HDV codec and you didn't convert it to ProRes 422 first.

Short of doing converting all that video, convert a duplicated edit timeline to the ProRes 244 codec and try it again.

Firstly, for playback on a computer screen it is best to deinterlace. This can be done in Compressor, using JES deinterlacer or a good deinterlace plugin like Nattress.

Secondly, as Dave says, HDV is tough on a computer processor, so you are best to convert it to ProRes 422 or ProResLT. Make sure your drive is fast enough.

Good luck. It doesn't always work, especially in a feature-length project.
