HDV/HD to DVDsd: real poor quality
on Mar 29, 2011 at 5:02:21 pm

Hi,
i've looked deeply in the forum to look for some helping, but i found out that many people have my problem..
From a PRes (from HDV material)8-bit sequence, i'm trying to get the best quality version on DVDsp (my video will be 15 minutes..very nice on FCP).
I've gone through (always using default settings, except increased bitrate values, frame controls ON, best quality encoding on DVD Studio):
1-direct output on QTmovie to DVD STudio
2-Sequence sent to compressor (90minutes best), than to DVD Studio
3-direct output on QTmovie to Toast.
4-direct output on QTmovie to Compressor than to DVD Studio

Always get poor quality, texts are pixelated, no HD detail keeped.
I'm alittle depressed..the only thing i still dind't tried is to copy my sequence to a PalDv 16:9 sequence and that export from there..but i'd love to hear from you first..
tnx

[gabriele gismondi] "Always get poor quality, texts are pixelated, no HD detail keeped."

Because DVDs aren't HD quality, they are SD. If you want HD quality, you need to invest in BluRay options.

Out put your video from the FCP Sequence using "current settings"
drop that into compressor.
Like you have, frame controls on best. Bump up the data rate.
Won't look as a good as HD but still should look decent.
What's your highest data rate used?

You can also try using iDVD. Make sure u select high quality from preferences.
I got very good quality results for HDV content using iDVD.

Edit your compressor dvd preset.
You must use the resize filter in frame controls.
It will give you descent SD quality.
But it still will suck on a HD screen.
Hdv to dvd played on HD screen= no go.

hi thanks for tips.
i usually set 2 pass vbr average 6,5 max 8,5, then go for encoding.
still can't get un-pixeled texts--
of course i know sd dvd is not the same than bluray disc, but i'll be glad to get something better out using HDV clips than using sd clips..

Hummm, care to post a pic of your text here?
As you may know, thin text does not hold up well.

what is even better is change your HDV timeline to a ProRes Timeline.
This will improve text, graphics etc.

Export quicktime with current settings from FCP.

Then use compressor DVD preset with Frame controls ON
Resize filter to BEST.

Then Burn in DVD Studio Pro.

Hi Gabriele, did you ever find a solution to the HDV problem? I'm experiencing the same thing now. It's frustrating not to be able to get the same quality as the QT movie on a DVD.

Hi
i'm trying your ways but cannot get any improvemnts in final dvd quality from my HDV clips.
I've noticed tis: i've imported HDV clips via fireway, auto-conversion to ProRes, so i have a prores timeline with prores files. The fact is that i've always set Render controls (in Seq settings) to 8bit and not 10bit/YUV. Should it be changing the quality of the final QTmovie to put into Compressor/DVDS changing this setting to 10bit/YUV (i get right now that ProRes is 10bit..not 8 bit)?
tnx
gabriele

I've always found that the key is to resize the video properly using Compressor and "Frame Controls." Using default settings or the FCP timeline to resize will give very poor results.
