So I edit interviews... the subject has a wireless mic and the interviewer is un-miked.

I'm looking for a way to tell final cut to cut out everything EXCEPT where the volume is above a certain level so I can get a quick "edit" on my interview footage without listening to all the dead space and interviewer coaching.

Thanks

I don't know about automatically, but one can always view the waveforms on the timeline for the higher peaks and scrub around that way.

Nothing personal, but it seem once a week someone posts a question like yours asking if there is a plugin/automation to do tasks like this that are really basic functions of the editor.
If such automation, or ease of use becomes a reality in the future why will we need editors? And if we do need them, we will certainly pay them less since the software is doing the majority of the work.
My advice for all those in this situation is to make sure you charge enough to afford an assistant if you're not up for the grunt work of the job. This is the traditional way this is handled.

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
You should be suitably impressed...

You might be able to do this in After Effects. Here's a tutorial along the same lines to get you started.

Anyway, you might want to ask the AE expressions forum, but my guess (having never tried to do this, but I think it's a good idea) is to create two audio tracks of the same exported audio. Layer 1 is the control track and Layer 2 "audio level mapped to effect track."

Have fun, let me know if it works!
