Need Assistance w/ Export Settings in Final Cut Pro 6 (for all tvs)
on Mar 19, 2011 at 11:01:03 am

Hello,

I have a project that's going to be watched by many viewers on different television sets. <u>What's the best way for me to export (what are the best Export settings) so that no matter what TV the project is being watched on, no text or picture will "bleed" off the screen?

FYI: Some viewers will be watching on Flats Screens others Network stations watching on Regular Tvs.

Thanks in advance for the help.

What are the settings of your Sequence?
What is the format of your video?
What is the frame rate?

Hi Chris,

29.97 is my editing time base. 1440X 1080 is the size. The format is HD.

You turn on the TV SAFE guides in the Canvas. The drop down menu in the canvas, up top.

Hey Shane,

If I now go back and put my footage in the TV safe frames, will I have to go clip by clip and adjust the video and titles, or is there a quick command fix in Final Cut I can use? FYI: I have a quite a few layers of video (due to overlays and effects), pictures, and lower thirds.

Thanks :)

Did you pay attention to title safe when you created your grfx?

There is no quick fix in FCP. You have to adjust your titles and graphics manually to fit within the title safe area. Keep in mind that if people have a 4:3 set, you also have to keep your titles and graphics within that safe area.

Not to be funny (or snarky for the sake of it) but doesn't anyone learn anything technical any more?

How can you expect to deliver for broadcast television if you don't understand title safe areas?

Hi Ben,

My project is not for live broadcast. It's a pilot that will be placed on DVD.

While I can understand your passion for your industry, it is important to remember that every veteran was once a rookie. I'm sure you're good at what you do, but there was once a day when even you had to be taught.

My point of starting this forum was for assistance not judgement. I am thankful for the help of those who have taken their expertise, and left great advice and assistance so that I can learn.

That way, when I do go to live broadcast, I can present a professional piece.

With all due respect :)

[LaToria Pierce] "If I now go back and put my footage in the TV safe frames"

NO NO No no no no no no. You don't shrink your footage to fit in the title safe areas...action safe areas. YOu just make sure that your TITLES and GRAPHICS stay within those areas. You have to keep the picture full frame, otherwise you'll have black borders around things. And when's the last time you saw a show on TV with that?

[LaToria Pierce] "will I have to go clip by clip and adjust the video and titles, or is there a quick command fix in Final Cut I can use?"

No. You will have to adjust your TITLES only. Do not adjust your footage to fit those areas. Not at all. The broadcasters will yell at you. Reject the show.

[LaToria Pierce] "FYI: I have a quite a few layers of video (due to overlays and effects), pictures, and lower thirds. "

That is what you adjust. And yes, every one separately so that you know it is right. This is what is called ONLINE EDITING. And that is so important, it is a profession onto itself.

Shane,
Thanks again for all of your help. This is all new for me but a good learning experience nonetheless.
