using files off a external hard drive

Hey guys

Just a couple of questions..

I've been playing around on FCP7 for a few months and a friend has sent me some footage on a seagate expansion external drive. All the clips are in AVI format when i tried to import the folder of clips this message popped up..

The following media files are not optimized for final cut pro.

It is highly recommended that you either recapture the media or use the media manager to create new copies of the files to improve there performance in multi-stream playback.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the next step??

If i'm not using the clips for multi-streaming can i just proceed with the project?? Just would like to understand what that meant.

Thanks very much

Cheers
Ben

Generally you should edit with QuickTime movies that conform to the specs in one of the FCP Easy Setups. These will give you real time performance.

The tool to convert the files is Compressor.

AVI files are better supported on PC's, however if things seem to working to your needs, have at it.

Or mpeg streamclip is a good one, use it to transcode everything to Prores, quick and easy.
