Final Cut capture files too large
on Feb 4, 2011 at 11:30:30 pm

I'm sure this is a simple fix, but so far I haven't been able to figure it out.

I'm trying to capture footage from my camera through fire wire connection. I've checked all my settings, everything should be working fine. I have just over 200 gigs of hard drive space.

The capture files are massive and I'm running out of space. I'm trying to capture a 10 minute clip, but I'm unable to. One 17 second clip is 63 MB. Capture/Input is DV NTSC 48 kHz.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much!

DV NTSC is 13gb per hour. It doesn't get better, doesn't get any worse.

I'm using more than 150 gigs for less than 5 minutes.

I captured my footage using iMovie and had no trouble. I'm thinking I can import to FCP that way. I can't figure out why FCP is making file sizes so huge when it says I should have over 500 minutes available.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, easy set up didn't work either.

I was able to capture the entire clip by breaking it up into short segments and batch capturing. Something is causing FCP to crash after about 4 minutes of capturing, so what it does have is uncompressed and is why it's taking up so much space. Breaking it up into three minute segments avoided crashing. Any idea on why it would crash at the same point every time?

Thanks again for the responses. I'm able to work around the problem now, hopefully I'll be able to fix it.

Dave
