How to turn off audio sync feature?
on Feb 3, 2011 at 8:26:43 pm

Final Cut seems to have this nifty feature to help you going from 24fps to 23.976 (and other frame rate conversions)... it automatically adjusts (the sample rate, I guess) so that it plays back in sync, without having to do any time stretching in another app. This is great, until it gets confused.

On another project, it is trying to adjust the audio when it should not. The audio is being sped up, thus way out of sync by the end of the movie. We've tested the audio in ProTools and everything matches up, but when placed in FCP, the audio drifts.

Any idea how to adjust either FCP or this audio file to get it to work? Or another work around?

This project is 25fps. FCP 7.0.3

Are the sample rates in your audio files and the sequence settings the same? 48khz?
Select an audio clip then Command+9. What's the sample rate?

Yes, everything is 48 KHz, 24 bit. The audio is a LtRt mix.

I believe this has something to do with FCP not assigning the correct frame rate to audio files upon import.
Try this "fix": Control (right) click on the audio track in your timeline and change the speed to 99.9

In sync now?

Changing it to 99.9 did not fix the issue, but THEN changing it back to 100... BAM!... all good, all in sync.

Thank you much!

Don't know if this might help, but Final Cut does some strange things with audio imports. Here's a tutorial about the issue:

http://library.creativecow.net/lyon_matt/fixing-fcp-assets/1

Here's a relevant quote:

"Unfortunately, certain file formats, like AIFF, WAV and PNGs do not contain timecode tracks.

This is the first important concept to wrap your head around:

When you import a media file that does not contain timecode, FCP will "assign" a timebase to the file. The timebase it uses is based on your DEFAULT SEQUENCE SETTING, as selected in your "audio/video settings" window.

It does not matter what the settings are of your open sequence(s)."

Hope you've warmed up from your Utah trip. Congrats again on your film's success!
