I'm cutting a multi format project, from EX to, 35mm to mini dv through to Digi beta.
I've set the sequence to 1080 16:9 using the EX compressor so my mini dv footage has got to be upscaled to fit the screen, it looks OK on my little screen, but I reckon it's going to look awful on the big screen.
I have a creative idea to get around that, but I'm wondering if there's a technical solution?
I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but thought I'd ask anyway.
Rule #1...when mixing codecs, do not use a GOP format sequence setting. XDCAM is a GOP format. The format is complex and will cause the machine to slow down, and crash often. When mixing formats, use a PRO RES sequence setting.
As for the DV footage, if you can't capture it via hardware like a Kona card or Matrox or Decklink card, that does hardware upconversions, then it would be wise to get software like INSTANT HD from redgiantsoftware.com to do the conversion. It does a great job. Or you can use Compressor, but you have to know your way around the settings.
