OMG!! Capture files GONE
on Jan 25, 2011 at 5:39:41 pm

Please help.

All of the capture files in my capture have disappeared

I've run disk warrior and they're still unrecovered

If I have to recapture it's not the end of the world, but if I can help it I'd rather not. I borrowed at dv cam for the job

Many thanks

Hi paul,
There are many applications that lets you recover deleted files.
This is the solution when there is no other mean to recover the media.
If you can re-capture, do it. Will be easier and faster.

What Jeremy said ... There are often several Capture Scratch folders.

Well, it looks as though I'm gonna have to recapture :(

Just tried a data recovery app to no avail

I have only one location for scratch and capture and I know exactly where that is because I've use it had to find it for use in after effects too.

Oh well. Thank god the deadline is not today! Small mercies

Many thanks to you all for your help and speedy response

Incidentally - the files went into the ether during an export for soundtrack (yes that's how close I was to being done). error message "There was an error exporting".... then back to the project window and all files showing as "media offline"

If this means anything to anyone I'd like to hear your thoughts

It sounds like the files were on an external that became unmounted and now it can't find them.

I wish it were that easy

I've now run a deeeeeep scan. It's found loads of deleted files (deleted months ago), but NONE of the capture files that went missing this afternoon

This is really, very weird

Used 2 different data recovery tools - nada!

Hi Paul,
Data recovery applications are very specialized and seems that the applications you are using are designed for Audio.
Try (free trial) DataRecover or FileSalvage. They are designed to recover QT, MPEGS, JPEG and similar.
They won't look for other kind of stuff.
If your footage was ever wrote on the HD, will find it.

Thanks Raf,

FileSalvage pretty much found the same things my other data recovery app did. So still no joy

It's bizarre - I just don't get it - makes no sense

Recapturing footage is going to be a new experience for me. Hopefully it won't be cause for much grief.

I have a feeling I captured at the wrong frame rate anyway - not as daft as it may initially sound, but still a bit stupid, sure. I captured a standard def dv tape, so set up as PAL 25fps. However, it's a super8 footage so should be, probably 24fps

I guess I'd need to tell FCP that it's progressive too?

Some testing needed. I'm learning a lot :) ha ha

I don't think by mistake you can capture 24p stuff with a PAL capture preset.
In the end of the day DVp24 tapes are plain NTSC. You add the pull-down to the p24 picture to get the standard NTSC (i29,97).

It really depends on the telecine process.

In a previous thread, someone found their files in the trash. Have you checked there?

"It really depends on the telecine process. "

Ok, so I looked up pulldown and telecine :)

So I probably haven't messed up, but I need to check. I think (if I'm correct) it's likely that the tapes I've received are PAL 25fps as I'm in Britain. Some experimentation will probably yield answers

Is it possible to capture 24fps as 25fps i.e. The dv cam spat out the footage at 25fps because that's how FCP asked for it? And now I just have footage that's playing back 4% faster?

Paul

Paul, I would assume your dv tape is PAL. You wouldn't have been able to capture it otherwise. FCP does not 'ask' for a certain format, it can only capture what you feed to it. If dv pal worked for you, then I would assume your tape to be PAL. Does your dv deck even have an NTSC option?

It is also quite possible the speedup has already been applied during the telecine process and you won't have to do anything. Call the people who did the transfer.

Also, there's no gaurantee that the footage was shot 24p. You are going to have to capture the footage as dv PAL and take a look. It could have been @ 18fps for example.

Is your capture scratch in your Trash?
FCP can follow this folder into your trash.

BTW, have you tried to use the "SEARCH FOR...all Movies" function?.

Search for movies hadn't occurred to me - but alas... no

The Super8 was shot at 24fps not 18. I shot it - it was great fun. It's for a music video that will have a screening in London next friday, if any of you are around? :)

It features the 2 guys from the band (called incidentally - The Title Sequence) having some fun on their 'Payday'. A couple of sunny days here in London, a vintage clothing store, a retro bowling lane, a multi storey car park and plenty of shots of a mini cooper

Sorry - a bit shameless I know, but did I mention it was so much fun?

I'm completely stumped by this, but recapture will be fine I'm sure

Thanks again all

Paul

[Paul Stroud] "Sorry - a bit shameless I know, but did I mention it was so much fun?"

Cool, man :) A little positive enthusiasm is always good around here.

Ask whoever did the transfer, it's quite possible the speed has already been taken care of when transferred to PAL.

Thanks for all your help guys- recapture went well

I spoke to the telecine op and he just speeds the 24fps super8 to 25. Which would explain how the one bit of action that is synced to the music drifted out of time a little :D I thought it was just the super8 cam deviating a little

Bingo. Never hurts to ask, right?
