H264 in Flash Wrapper?
on Jan 25, 2011 at 10:41:29 am

Hey everyone, so Ive asked about this before and Im sure it cant be that complicated, but I need to make sure it works because its for a few clients. H264 is obviously far quicker encoding than literally re-encoding an export from FCP to FLV. So what I want is to be able to "wrap" an H264 movie in an flv (or flash player compatible) wrapper. How do I do this?
Thanks!

Two options:

1) click the classic cow button at the bottom of the page, then find your way to the subscribe link

2) Leave feedback to Abraham here: http://forums.creativecow.net/cowcowmunications

Just change the .mov extension to .flv

[Dave Farrants] "Just change the .mov extension to .flv"
Right.
".f4v" extension works too (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/f4v.html), and probably ".m4v" too.

Hey Thomas-

You may want to read up on Flash Video. Over the past few years, Flash Video (v9 and above) has supported H.264 - i.e. the 'essence' of the FLV video can actually be an h.264 encoded file.

Renaming the files (as mentioned above) is one way, or, simply using an up to date encoder (Adobe Media Encoder, Telestream Episode, for example) are other avenues to pursue.

I've heard that Adobe is making noises about this procedure, saying it should not be used, as it may be broken by future development. Part of an Apple/Adobe tit for tat war? Maybe.

Possibly the reason you're finding encoding to Flash slow, is because your encoder is slow?

I have a client who requires the same thing - H.264 wrapped in flash. Just changing the extension was not an option because of their website programming. They needed a flash file. I used Adobe Flash Encoder. It was very easy to use and inexpensive since we already had the program.

[Miriam Lefkowitz] "I have a client who requires the same thing - H.264 wrapped in flash. Just changing the extension was not an option because of their website programming."

That's the thing. Some people have older versions of Flash and don't support the m4v.

That's right.
No problem about Video or Audio, but there are differences on how both files are "Prepared for Internet Streaming..".
If you just gonna hang some clips on a web site, probably is not a big issue; for other services may be a NO-NO.

Somebody please correct me if Im wrong, but I think the short answer is that you can't wrap an h264 into an flv.

Flash video players will play H264 material, but the player has to be coded to accept the h264. So you either need to have a custom-coded player developed for you or use something like this: http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-player-now/ ,which happens to be the most versatile and robust player on the market right now. It also features an HTML5 video feature, so the videos will also play on iPhone, iPad, etc..

Hope this helps!

Any recent Flash player om the web seems to have no problem with it, since v9 I think.

QT Player don't work with H264.flw and FLASH does the same with H264.mov.
JW Player plays both.

As someone stated before, .f4v is h.264 in a flash wrapper. In my experience, it gives me better quality/lower file sizes then .flv conversion, but the developers I work with always say it won't work. When I ask why, they just say it doesn't work. They are not video experts.

Most streaming h.264 videos (read: Youtube) are actually h.264 .mp4s embedded in an .swf. This setup works pretty much every version of flash.

Again, you are dealing with developers, and whatever version of flash the viewer has.

Either way, I would start with a QT encode, and then convert to flash via Adobe Media Encoder (or whatever). It requires the computer to do less simultaneous tasks, and who knows when you're going to need that full quality mov in the future.
