How do I make fluid slow motion from 60fps on FCP??
on Jan 24, 2011 at 11:39:01 am

I have some footage taken with my Canon T2i in 720p 60fps.
I am able to view the slowmotion in QuickTime pro by selecting "view all frames", but I have not found the way to get the same result in FCP. Is there a way to do it on FCP? I also use After Effects if FCP doesn't offer such possibility.
I have heard of softwares like Shake and plug-ins like Twixtor. Are those mendatory to get the result I am looking for?

Thanks in advance!

Open the footage in Cinema Tools and conform it to either 24 or 30 fps. Then import it into Final Cut and it will be slow and crystal clear...

Thanks guys! You made my day... and my week!

Just another little question... What is the advantage of 23.98fps or 29.97fps?

Thanks!

[Justin Nagy] "What is the advantage of 23.98fps or 29.97fps?"

Well, if you shot 24p, or 23.98 for the main footage...the normal speed stuff, then you convert your high speed to this format. If you shot your normal speed stuff at 29.97, then use that setting to convert to. make sure you convert to the frame rate that matches the rest of your project.

So if all my footage is at 60fps, does it make any difference?

It does make a difference. The whole point of shooting more frames per second to achieve slow motion is that your main frame rate is LESS than that you are shooting for slow motion. 24fps (23.98) so when you shoot 60fps the footage is 2.5x slower. 30fps (29.97) so that the 60fps footage is twice as slow. But if you shoot everything at 60fps, you can't slow anything down to match your main footage. It is ALL 60fps. Slowing 60fps to 60fps gets you...well...0x slow motion.
