How to enable legacy codec in OS X 10.6.4
on Jan 17, 2011 at 1:09:00 am

Hi,

Trying to enable Legacy codec with no luck. Am really after Apple Motion JPEG-A, which you could get to in QT Preferences and ticking a box (not now)!

I tried enabling from terminal, although I got a enable message I didn't get Motion JPEG-A, not sure what it unlocked actually.

If some one can help that would be great.

I'm, on Mac OS X 10.6.4

Thanks
Gwen

Apple Support is your friend:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1149

Which says:

Take the following steps to enable additional encoders:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
Choose View > QuickTime.
Click the Advanced button.
Select the checkbox next to Show legacy encoders.

Hope this does the job.

Is Motion JPEG-A also not around?

[Gwen Sputore] "Is Motion JPEG-A also not around?"

I looked for you Gwen, and indeed it seems you have discovered something, and so it seems we're all going to be living with no Motion JPEG-A from now on.

I wonder what other codecs have gone the way of the dinos now that there is no more legacy codec checkbox?

Common, how do you think QT would stop supporting all those codecs just like that?
I'm on Snow Leopard and FC 7.0.3 AND I HAVE ALL THE LEGACY CODECS AVAILABLE.

Did you installed QT 7?

Didn't load the software myself but QT7 is in the utilities folder and can launch and use it no issues, so I assume it was QT7 was installed correctly.

Are you on OS X 10.6.4?

Any ideas on what else could be going on.

It's not in QT export, but I have Motion PEG in MPEG Streamclip.

I have the full codecs list available everywhere.
This is in QT:

I'm in 10.6.6 but I don't think is not a Mac OS related issue.
I have set QT 7 as the DEFAULT PLAYER for everything.

Must be coming from someplace else. It's not in the standard QT package. This is what I have. In Streamclip I have an Apple Motion JPEG codec, but it doesn't appear in the QT7 player.

You're just getting special treatment Rafael, cuz they're not available any more on my machine.

[David Roth Weiss] "You're just getting special treatment Rafael, cuz they're not available any more on my machine."
QT Lao version?
Whatever the issue, Apple can't do this just like that.
Unless..Apple is trying to discourage people for exporting to those old codecs. those codecs are - and must be for long - readeable, but not an export option on QT Player (still in MPGStreamclip and probably others).
WHY me I have the option God?
Probably because - against your wise advise, David - I installed SL on top of Leopard, so was something from the old QT 7 on the System.
Any other guess?

Probably.
I remember that after SL, I did installed QT 7 from the same disk.

Yeah, saw it in MPEG Streamclip, but was hoping to export direct from FCP and AVID instead of exporting a native QT from the editing software and then exporting from MPEG Streamclip.

Export a reference movie.

This must be done on the command line. Open Terminal, then copy and paste:

qtdefaults write LegacyCodecsEnabled yes

I should add that I have tested and confirmed this on my workstation running 10.6.5, but it should work for 10.6.4 as well.

Perhaps rebooting or relaunching QT-based applications after rewriting the preferences is necessary? If it still fails, what happens if you create a new user account and try with that?

What Mr. Soyka says.

I did this a while ago on a Snow Leopard only machine (never had leopard on it).

The terminal will set those codecs free.

Hi, I've tried that and although it say's they are now enabled I can't see it as an option. In fact I can't see what other codec it enables. I think it's a placebo.

[Gwen Sputore] "Hi, I've tried that and although it say's they are now enabled I can't see it as an option. In fact I can't see what other codec it enables. I think it's a placebo."

It does work -- having done it on several machines, I can export Motion JPEG A on all of them. This also enables a bunch of other less-useful legacy codecs, including H.261, Sorenson Video, and Planar RGB.

If it's not working for you, there must be something else wrong with your system. I suggested trying it under a new user account as a troubleshooting step, but you might also try the usual system maintenance steps.

All that said, it sounds like Tom's suggesting of exporting a reference movie and using MPEG Streamclip will get the job done very easily.

Thanks Walter, good to know that someone did get it working. It tried it on two different stations and neither one has enabled the legacy codecs. I'll talk to IT here and see what could be our issue.

Finally got it working. We reloaded QT7 from the install disk and then enabled the codecs at terminal level.

They are all there.

Thank you everyone for helping me out

Dear zingarra,

How did you do this feat at the terminal level? can you please guide me through the steps.
Urgently need to take out Sorenson codec mov file through quicktime.

Warm regards,
