do color filters degrade image quality?
on Jan 11, 2011 at 2:22:41 am

hi all,

i'm finishing up a project and have already color corrected at post house (on FCP Color).

there was one scene that we didn't get quite to my liking.

so, i've been doing some home color correcting, using 3-way and RGB filters...but i noticed that a couple shots have a sort of 'faded' look.

is this because of the 3-way? or RGB? or both?

any suggestions on best to use these filters without image degradation?

thanks very much for any/all advice.

Noe of those cause washed out footage. Not to be ride here but, perhaps inexperience? I don't know your level of experience, so don't take it wrong. But color correcting is a skill thy takes a while to perfect. You might not be compensating for things, or are over compensating. the fact that you had it colored by a pro leads me to assume your level of expertise.

Why not have them redo? I always address corrections.

thanks for the info. shane...

yeah, i'm definitely not an experienced color corrector.

if it's user-related, do you happen to know what might
be causing the washed out look?

i'm trying to be judicious and basically tweaking mids by 5 pts (on 3 way) and tweaking colors by 5 pts. (RBG).

thanks for any ideas you might have.

When you raise the mids you need to compensate by lowering the blacks. The 3-way is too broad in how it does things...the mids affect the blacks and highlights.

Plus I doubt you have a capture card and broadcast monitor for proper viewing of your footage. You aren't looking at what you are doing in any proper way. The Canvas isn't color accurate.
