Final Cut Pro suddenly distorts audio!??
on Jan 7, 2011 at 11:31:31 am

Hi
I have filmed much with my 7d using a juicedlink mixer and imported it into final cut pro.
Suddenly when I am editing the sound gets distorted and really high even though the sound waves look fine. It happens mostly in transitions on all my timelines. Here is a video clip of the phenomenon: http://enelesfilm.se/ovrigt/audiofail-desktop.m4v
Look at the audio meters :( Why is it like this and how do I fix it?!
Thank you so much for any help!

As it happens where there's a mix it may be a bad render, so if you get rid of the mix and remake it, that might fix it.

what do you mean with the get rid of the mix?
This problem is totally random. I can play over a section many times and get either no distortions or many different sounding distortions on different places. Totally random!

By mix I mean cross-fade. But if it's random that changes my mind. Is the audio all at 48kHz?

I notice that there's been a few threads about this kind of thing, so it could be worthwhile searching through them...

What format are the clips? ProRes with 48khz audio? or? What are your sequence settings?

It's been a while, but a restart of the computer usually quells this for a while.

I have prores with 48khz audio but strangely some also are at 50050Hz.
Cant check the project right now but the Sequence settings should be ProRes LT 1920x1080 with 25fps and 48khz audio.

I have had this problem with this project for some months now so restarts have been made countless times :)

That's happened to me.

And while it doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense, here's what I do: open the Render Manager, and delete all the rendered items for the project. You have to use the Render Manager to do it; simply deleting the render files from the drives doesn't clear it up.

If you haven't trashed FCP Preferences for quite some time, you might want to do that first. Otherwise, this trick almost always works for me.

Ok I will try that!
Anyone have any ideas about the 50050Hz thing?

Well I have som clips conformed from 24fps to 25fps in Cinema Tools. Im not sure which but it must be those who have 50050Hz. I tried trashing preferences and deleting renders from render manager but it still doesnt work :(

Yes, when using Cinema Tools to conform, your audio is resampled and pitch is changed as the duration of your movie has changed.

[Simon Dybeck] "is there some easy way to convert the audio of all these clips to 48khz?"

Sure. Put the clips in a timeline, right click the audio portion of the clip and choose "Open in Editor".

Choose Process > Resample then choose 48000 from the drop down.

Now you need to save it as a Quicktime Movie (Choose save, and then choose Quicktime Movie form the drop down). I would suggest saving to the exact same spot the footage lives right now, essentially writing over the current 50050Hz file. Once you go back to FCP, the file should refresh and you audio will be 48k. This won't account for the pitch shift, though.

I use this technique to resample aifs all the time from 44.1 to 48k.

Hi
I tried your option and it wont work. Soundtrack Pro says it cant save as a quicktime movie. I also have a lot of clips like this so i'm looking for a quicker way of doing this?

The audio needs to be 48khz, you can use iTunes to convert it.

I tried changing playback settings to using high quality instead of low(faster) and it worked :D
No need to batch export :D

Hey Simon.

Sorry, I was away. What do you mean Soundtrack pro wouldn't let you save as QT movie?

So soundtrack pro gives you a dialogue that's says " it won't work"?

Just curious for my own needs as I am planning on making a tutorial out of this. It works great for me, but I would appreciate the help of you can tell me how it failed.

If you don't have time, I understand. Also, I'd still want to chnage that to 48k as FCP can sometimes screw up audio render files pretty badly. It's an easy fix, but it might save someone a post on the future.

Hi this is the message I get when trying to save it.

"Can't Save QuickTime File
This movie file does not support editing in place. Choose Save As or Save a Copy As to save this file."

Right. So you choose Save As > Quicktime Movie and the write over your current movie.

Thanks for responding.
