Westmere or Nehalem best for FCP?
on Dec 14, 2010 at 11:32:08 pm

I can either purchase the Nehalem 2.93GHz Quad Xeon, a 3.33GHz Six Core Westmere or a system configured with 2 Six Core Westmeres....they are really all about the same price. Maybe $500-$1000 in difference.

Are there any advantages with FCP and Compresor with any specific processor? My guess is the single 3.33 six core will be screaming fast. I know the Westmere processors have more cache (12mb vs. 8mb).

Anyway, anyone have any input I'd be grateful.

Also, anyone using a RAID card in their MAC besides the one Apple offers? I'm looking for something better than Apple is putting in and probably doubling the price on. =)

not for fcp but definitely compressor. more cores the better. get at least 2gb of ram per core for best performance.

for RAID I use the caldigit with their array tower.

That was a great resource - thanks for the link. I purchased the 3.33GHz single six-core processor system as that seemed to be the most bang for the buck. Like it so far!
