Gamma shifts before cut in QT reference export
on Nov 29, 2010 at 8:19:28 pm

Hi:

This is a weird one. I'm getting a visible gamma shift in several clips five to ten frames before a cut when I export my sequence as a Quicktime reference movie. This shift does not appear when viewed within FCP, it does not appear when the sequence is exported as a self-contained Quicktime, and it does not appear when I export using Quicktime conversion.

I've taken a bunch of 3D and motion graphics animation clips we've created over the past few years and used Quicktime Pro to convert them all to the ProRes HQ codec. Some of the clips are 4x3 NTSC, some are 16x9 NTSC, some are 1280x720 HD. I've edited them together in a 1280x720 sequence. The end result will be our reel, which we'll post to the web in various formats (640x360 probably).

I can work around this, but it seems pretty odd. It's not like the shift is happening at the start of a dissolve. It's happening before a cut, and it only appears in a reference QT.

I'm running FCP 7.0.3, QT 7.6.6, OS 10.5.8.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I can't say I see this or anything, but if it's only during playback of a reference movie, it's not really going to get in your way. It's likely a playback problem, and if you were to use the reference movie in another app or create a web stream from it, it won't show up in that new media file created, I'll bet.

Hi Jerry:

Thanks for taking the time to reply; I appreciate it.

Unfortunately, you'd lose your bet. When I bring the reference QT into Quicktime player to export an h.264 I get the gamma shifts. Same thing happens when I bring it into Compressor.

However, if I bring it into After Effects I don't get the shift, even when I play it as a Quicktime with AE (double clicking on it in the project window). It also plays correctly in the AE footage window (option double click).

I can continue to export an h.264 straight out of FCP, but I prefer the option of compressing it in another program.

Thanks again.

Really strange. Wish I had a quick fix, but don't other than reinstalling software.

At least you have a work around.
