Shooting & Editing in Slow Motion
on Nov 25, 2010 at 10:37:03 pm

I just got a JVC 700 Camera. I edit in FCP. Most of what I shoot will be edited in Slow Motion (1/2 to 1/3 speed). What are the best settings for the JVC Camera and FCP for what I am doing.
Thank You for your help.

With 720p60 you'll have the most frames to play with. But it's 720.
Frameblending is something you don't want in extreme slow motion. This is what FCP uses for slowmotion. You can turn it off but that doesn't mean the slowmotion looks good.

I think Optical Flow in Apple Motion or the plugin Twixtor will give the best results.

Shoot it 720p60 and import it to your scratch drive (as Apple ProRes would be best).

Use Cinema Tools to conform your imported footage to 720p30 or 720p24.

Set up FCP as Apple ProRes 720p60. Import your conformed 720p24 or 30p footage, it should now play as slow motion.

How good does this footage have to look? Perfect?

You have the wrong camera: you should have gotten a one that shoots slo-mo. Nowe, they DO cost more than your JVC camera, but if you're going to be doing a lot of slo-mo work -- as you make it sound -- you would be better off getting something that will actually DO slo-mo; you'll save yourself more time and money in the long run?

Okay, it doesn't have to look absolutely perfect? Do what the other guys say.
