What screencast / recording solution for edit in FCP?
on Nov 18, 2010 at 10:10:12 pm

I have a client who wants to do "how-to" vids for his site and wants me to do the VoiceOver and graphics (as well as music track) for him. What solution do you all recommend? Lookin for low cost solution if possible. Thanks in advance for your help!

Ah...I'd heard of those but couldn't remember the names. Any others from the rest of y'all?

Screenflow. I cannot recommend this more. Capture and edit all in that app. Much easier than iShowU, which requires a couple tricks to get it working RIGHT in FCP (sync slippage issue), and Snapz Pro that has a frame rate issue (10fps...need to conform with Cinema Tools).

IN Screenflow it records the full screen, then you choose the size you want to focus on, and the resize things to fit, and then do zooms and pans and all sorts of things. Add music, pictures, other media. Too damn good.

ScreenFlow can also export in whatever codec you have in Quicktime such as Apple ProRes for example or any other codec you might need to match your FCP timeline.

Great thread - I have been debating between Screenflow and iShowU HD. I'm on a Mac (10.6) with FCP7. I need to record an entire desktop with a video chat occurring on the desktop. The footage will then be incorporated into a short film to, hopefully, be screened at fests.

Any thoughts? It appears the Quicktime movie recording capacity is limited and not sharp.

Thanks!

Screenflow. Record to AppleProRes 1200x1200 screen which can be used in FCP either by repositioning or cropped to 1920x1080.

Thank you for the reply, Craig.

So there is no 1920x1080 setting in Screenflow? Sorry, I don't have it yet, so I can't check. 1200x1200 sounds a bit odd...

Also, is the "free" Quicktime option just not good enough? Why do folks purchase software when Quicktime records the screen?

Thanks,
cB

Oops! My bad. Screen records your full screen at whatever screen size you set your monitor to.
I meant to say 1920x1200 so you can crop that to 1920x1080.

The free Quicktime X feature records in H.264. I wouldn't want to put that in a timeline. Then you're faced with transcoding that already compressed file to another codec.

I'd much prefer to capture using ScreenFlows high quality capture and export directly to ProRes. ScreenFlow also has some unique feature that you can build in before export that would be very hard to duplicate in FCP.

Thank you for the clarification, Craig.

Well, looks like I'm going to be buying Screenflow. It's good to know it is so well regarded.

Well, it looks like screenflow is the best solution. I'll be checking that one out for sure. As always, thank you all for helping out so quickly with good information!
