Anamorphic playback in QuickTime
on Nov 9, 2010 at 4:12:57 pm

Just completed a video in FCP with a Sequence Setting of 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2) √ Anamorphic 16:9 - Looks great in FCP and as a DVD - But how should I export it for play back in Quick Time with the proper 16x9 screen ratio? I did a settings same as the sequence - but QT plays it back as tho it were 720x480 (which it is, of course,) but doesn't stretch it out to the proper proportions.

Thanks!

DD

In QT 7 Pro, show the movie properties. Then, highlight the .mov in the listing. Go to the bottom of the screen and you'll see "conform aperture to." Check the box and mess with those settings. It's sort of like playing with the zoom settings on your HD TV.

In my experience, QT X will display the .mov correctly. But if it doesn't I don't know how to adjust it. Re export as a native 16:9 resolution is the easiest safest thing to ensure it displays across all systems correctly. 853x480 to be exact.

Played around in QT Pro 7 - will do some more but couldn't get the screen proportions to change.

I'll try the export method you provided, as well.

thanks

There is a little utility called Anamorphiciser and it's used for preparing a QT exported from FCP for iDVD,
and of course it will work for you too.

Just drop your QT file on Anamorphiciser's icon and in 2 seconds it's all done, your QT will be anamorphisized.
