it's more than gamma shift, TIFFs very very severe crushing

Hi again guys,
i know this sounds like the age old gamma shift issue but it isn't
i dont think so anyway - if it is it's way more severe than the usual.

Any image i bring into final cut is ridiculously dark.
And no amount of gamma shifting or colour correction can brink back
the detail which is totally crushed out.
And yet the source file is fine.

Here is an example of the same image viewed in preview or photoshop
vs the same image (rendered and viewed at 100%) in FCP:

I having tried everything i can find by searching the forum
(changing timeline settings maximum white to super white etc etc)
Bringing the stills into a non DV (prores) project & so on..

I am using high quality tiffs in FCP 7.03 on OSX 10.5.8
This is a DV PAL project for DVD delivery.

I have done tests by making DVDs and playing them on TVs to look at the colours - not so very different from on my apple monitors - blacks utterly crushed (to the point that you can't see anything darker than a mid blue) , colours super saturated...

Does a workaround exist?
I anyone could even give me a hint that would be so helpful as i'm completely out of time.

Apologies if i'm being a simpleton also...

What kind of TIFF is it? Could it be 16 bit or 32 bit per channel?

Did you try converting it to a JPEG or PNG and seeing if that helps?

Hi Matt,
yes I tried jpegs as well - it's just the same unfortunately. I'm completely stumped...

That is a bit of a head scratcher. Do you have any funky color management turned on in Photoshop. Are your computer displays calibrated properly (and set to 2.2 gamma)

Can you upload the file anywhere? I could try opening it on my machine... (I'm only on FCP 6.0.6 though)

It's the same with all the tiffs and jpegs so i'm completley confused.
And i know it's not a monitor image as i can view the same image
beside my FCP viewer in preview or photoshop.

I have trashed prefs and everything...

If i try to just boost the image to get the detail back (obviously
not the right thing to do but just to see) the image falls apart...

What on earth am i missing?

I will upload an example now

It's CMYK, but it should be RGB.

Hi Christian,
You can select the Alpha of the stills on import.
Another thing that may be changing the picture contract, is the way that FC map RGB stuff.
Have a look to the Sequence Setting and see if (Render Control tab) is set to "Superwhites".

Thank you so much guys - dave rafael & matt - as usual i am showing my ignorance!

I tried changing the superwhites setting but that didn't do much.
So changing from CMYK to RGB...

A photoshop job?

Thank you so much again - will try it!
