Syncing issues...
on Sep 27, 2010 at 8:29:52 am

Hey Folks,

Recently I attempted to make add in some additional footage and end credits for a completed feature length project. All things seemed fine and were in working order. However, after a final render, I saved the project, but then discovered that 1/2 - 2/3's of the project has become out of sync. I've tried everything imaginable to fix the issue, and being not too accomplished an editor - more producer/director than editor - I'm at a loss as what to do to fix the problem? I don't want to go frame by frame, and need a solution. I was told by someone that there is a global sync in FCP 6, but how do I apply this approach?

Thank you.

What are the properties of the clips, and what are your sequence settings set to be?

There isn't a "Global" Sync command...

Jerry,

To begin, thank you for taking the time to respond to my query/plight. Unfortunately, I am a neophyte - particularly in the language of... - editing. I've been fortunate enough to have worked with & have had great editors work with me on numerous projects. As such, I've been applying what seems more intuitive than anything "formal" terms of my training/skill set.

If you can clarify how best to answer your questions, I'll pursue and respond post haste.

Again, thank you.

The clip properties are found by selecting one, then typing cmd+9 (apple key +9) Post what the window says.

Then select your sequence in the Browser and type cmd+zero. Post what each of these windows have to say about the clip properties and the sequence settings.

I know what your problem is!

FCP doesn't support h.264 nor MPEG -4 editing.

You need to transcode (re-compress) all footage like this to ProRes before you edit. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's a fact.

This recompression can be done by importing the footage to compressor and selecting ProRes as the format to transfer it to. Then you import those new files into FCP and edit normally.

Thank you for clarifying. Would changing my render set up from H.264 to Pro Res also have the same result? If not, leaving the Pro Res setting as the desired means should alleviate this from occurring in the future?

It turns out that the solution posed only works on 1/3 of the project, roughly the first 27 mins. However, there's an additional 44 mins that are still out of sync. For the record, I applied your solution via way of FCP by altering the settings and re-rendering the entire project. That being said, I'm now in the process or importing the entire project via way of compressor in the hope that this will fix the entire project. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

As far as I know, the only fix is to rebuild your project from ProRes files. Setting the render to ProRes likely won't fix you up.
