Real Stereo Final Cut Enigma!
on Sep 21, 2010 at 9:27:21 am

Hi there!
I've edited a short and now I'm editing the audio.
I tried for hours to put a voice on the right channel and an ambient sound on the left channel with no result.
Then I unplug my original Apple earphones and try to hear the audio with a 2 dollar pair of chinese hearphones and I discover that I actually managed to create a "stereo effect". My original Apple earphones just didn't let me hear that! (like they're set to output a mono audio)
The question is: why?

Have you panned the individual clips for the voice and fx to the left or right in the viewer? You will need to do this for each clip.

To make this quicker, make sure all the voice is on one track, and all the fx on a second one. Pan the first voice clip to the left, using the slider, then copy it by right (or CTNL) clicking on it, then selecting every other clip in that track with the track tool, then right clicking again, selecting 'paste attributes' and ticking the box marked 'pan'. Repeat with a right pan for the fx track.

It should be obvious from the audio meters if you have successfully managed to split the audio.

If some of the above doesn't make sense, have a look in the FCP help under audio - you'll find the answers to many enigmas there.

Thank you for the answer, but the problem is that with cheap earphones I can actually hear my left-panned or right-panned audio, this means that I managed to do that. When I plug in my Apple earphones I don't hear any panning any more, like it's turning the audio into mono. Why there's a difference?

Iphone is mono. So if the earphones are from an Iphone, it makes sense...

Or, you did not plug in the jack deep enough. Have a look at the jack.
Do you see 2 or 3 divisions?
(first (closed to the wire) is mass, second is left, third is right.)
If you only see two, no way a stereo signal can travel over it...

iPhone is not mono, but the plug is not standard, as it has a contact for the microphone. If you pull the plug out slightly from the socket, you can get the contacts lined up properly to get stereo..but you should really just get a normal set of headphones for the job.

I should have imagined that! Thank you, now that I understand the problem I really feel better. This is the first time in my life that a chinese cheap product works ""better"" then the original Apple one :D
Bye!

My bad, you are right.

But how did i get the idea? Was it something with Bluetooth being mono then?
(i've worked on iPhone stuff some time ago, and can remember 'something' being mono, and was rather disturbed by that....)

And no, i don't have an Iphone...

I've bought the earphones from a store, they have 3 divisions.. They look exactly like the cheap ones. The funny thing is that I've just tried to use ANOTHER pair of Apple earphone (this pair was included in my iPhone 4 package) and the result is the same, a sort of "mono" audio from Final Cut. What a strage thing...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but you shouldn't be mixing the audio using headphones because it will sound very different in headphones than it will when played over speakers.

Apple gets their iPhone and accessories manufactured in a plant in China. They are both Chinese headphones, so the difference between the cheap Chinese headphones and the Apple headphones is mostly the price.

Editing audio in FCP is going to be frustrating. Frame based accuracy poor EQ & dynamics, no bus routing, clunky automation. Save your self a lot of heart ache and move the project into STP or find a sound editor with decent audio system.

Andrew's point about headphones is very relevent. Judging mix balance and EQ with cheap headphones is as bad as grading on a non calibrated computer monitor or using FCP Canvas display.

@Andrew Kimery
Yeah now I'm editing just some clips in SoundTrack, next time I'll edit the whole sequence in STP for sure!
