FCP to Compressor question
on Sep 6, 2010 at 9:33:21 am

After sticking with the Export Queue for years, I finally decided to try the various ways of sending to Compressor.

My only gripe with Export Queue was having no way to save favourite settings, and having to re-enter the same data every time i open it up. So time to try the options in Compressor...

The one thing i cant seem to figure out though, is there a way to send to Compressor only the video between the in/out points on a timeline? Use In/Out Points is a great option in the Export Queue, but it seems to be lacking in the methods for sending to Compressor.

If its possible - can someone explain how?

thanks

I dunno what an Export Queue is, but to create you own custom setting, choose a setting in the Settings tab. Near the top of that pane, there are 3 buttons (if you're in FCS2, I dunno about the new FCS). The third button duplicates the selected setting. From there you can modify/name it in the Inspector tab. Then click the save button at the button of the Inspector

I'm not sure what you're doing because I've always been able to mark In and Out points in my timeline and send whatever I want to Compressor. You can also mark In and Out points in the Preview window in Compressor. Or, mark your In and Out of your timeline, export a reference movie, then bring the reference movie into Compressor.

Export Queue is fcp's built in batch exporter.

I have everything setup as i need in Compressor - thats not the problem...i need to send different sections of the timeline to different folders, at different settings. I found that compressor ended up with the same in/out points regardless of how i had set them prior to sending from FCP.

I'll try again - maybe my fault!

following on from your reply Rob, i've done some more tests and know what i did wrong.

if anyones interested, sending to Compressor from fcp will use the in/out points...however, once in Compressor i made the mistake of dragging the various clips into one batch window, applying the different settings to the various clips and submitting. Thats causes Compressor to lose the in/out point info and instead it renders the entire clip instead of the bit you set with I/O points.

So as long as you don't move a clip from its own batch window, it should export correctly when you apply your settings.
