Which Version of FCP for EMAC?
on Sep 3, 2010 at 11:02:02 am

I've just been given an old emac and I'm wondering what version of Final Cut Pro I should run on it. Here are the emac details:

os: osx 10.2
cpu: 700 mhz Power PC G4
RAM: 128 MB

My understanding is that it will need to be an old version of FCP and that it will be slow but I'm ok with this because I'm planning to do rough cuts on it then switch to another mac, that I share with others, to finish FCP projects off.

Hi peter,
I think that you will be able to run FC 5.1 on that computer.
You will need as well QT 7.2 or so.

One thing to know about that older computer, the older versions of FCP will be incompatible with many of the modern formats that are being used today. So not even sure if it will be useful as an offline cut station.

Hi
128MB of RAM is not enough - you should have the full 1GB that that eMac supported for any real work.

It will run FCP v4.1.1 or v4.5 HD if you update it to Panther OS X 10.3.9 - it might work with Jaguar 10.2.8 but nothing before 10.2.6 was any good at all.

QuickTime can be v7.1.5 even if you find that FCP v5.0.4 or much better v5.1.4 will not overpower it.

All these were/are stable versions, but a lot of the other interim versions were not fully reliable.

Isn't this effort like taking your county-fair-midway-prize goldfish to the vet, or your bic lighter to the jeweler for repair?

Yeah, just go buy a used Mac mini and you will get better results and keep your sanity.
