Export looks bad
on Aug 16, 2010 at 4:05:15 pm

I have been using FCP for a few years now, I recently purchased a new iMac, 2.66 Ghz Intel core i5 4gb ram and a ATI video card ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 mb. I'm using a 10.6 came installed on the mac. I have FCP Studio 2, which has FCP 6. First thing I noticed is when I do a Log and Transfer from my cannon Visia HG21 that it looks fine until I put it in the timeline. Then it shows shimmers of color and streaks, almost like an old VHS tape. If I put it in via Toast, it looks fine. After I edit the video and even render it, when I export it the video looks very bad, like VHS, again jumpy and color streaks. IF I XML it to Adobe it and then export it the video looks fine. I have ran out of trial and error ways to fix it?? I called Apple, who transfered me to FCP specialist who then said they can't help because I have not bought the tech support for FCP, I paid for the Final Cut Studio and my mac is still under the 90 days.

It's probably due to the codec used to record the video. I'd bet it's H.264 or some mpeg flavor, which needs to be converted to ProRes. You can do it with Compressor.

I had always used log can transfer before. It is in AVCHD format. I never had an issue before. I have 10.6 with FCP 6.

Hi Berlin,
You may give a try to "ClipWrap".
That re-wrap the AVCH files as QT (no re-compression) which you can edit directly in FC.
There is a free trial version.

Thanks, I guess what I dont under stand is why my older Mac works fine at work. I bought a new Mac, and I'm having all kinds of problems. It only effects me when I do a Apple Codec, like h.264 and appleTV format. If I do a DVD in compressor it looks fine.
