FCP EDL Problems
on Aug 12, 2010 at 10:02:06 am

Hello

It still seems that Apple haven't sorted the problem with EDLs where it doesn't recognise reverse shots.
Has anyone found a way round this as it's proving a nightmare !!

Thanks

Hi,

Don't know if you have tried to apply the reverse as a filter?
G rev: http://www.nattress.com/Free/freeFCP.htm
this will shift your fields as well (usefull if you work interlaced;-)
Does not now if this helps you out in your workflow, since I don't know where you are taking your edl...

Hope it helps,
Andreas

EDLs are ancient and locked in stone. I don't think EDls are capable of showing a reverse shot except by making a note under the event to indicate speed information.

Apple said it was a bug in FCP V7....but that was ages ago !!!

Paul, are you talking about importing or exporting EDLs? I only really have experience with exporting EDLs:

When I send an EDL to an online facility, I always include a separate spreadsheet listing all my speed effects shots (and any other effects for that matter). That way the online editor can manually check each clip in the show that has speed changes.

I also open my EDLs and eye check the timecode entries for all the speed effect shots, adjusting if necessary. In the past I've often had to adjust the "source out" TC, as it is usually wrong. (I'm not sure about FCP 7's success or failure in this area--I haven't used it much).

Hope this helps,

Yes I'm exporting EDL's for an Online house conform.
The reverse shots are not in reverse on the EDL, the in point is right but numbers run forward.

Yeah, that's the way it's always worked for me too. Are you seeing an line at the bottom of the EDL event similar to this:

M2 AX -025.0 00:08:38:15

(this is from a PAL timeline. The "-25.0" indicates the reverse speed effect)

But yes, the timecode will run forward. That's always been the case for me too. I'm not sure if it a limitation of EDLs or of FCP. In any case, as I mentioned, I edit the out point to reflect the "real" out point.

I've never had a complaint from any online house when using this trick, but then again, this may cause errors in their software that they are not telling me about...

I've never had this problem until FCP V7.
