50i to 25p half speed - is there an easy way?? [60i to 30p if in NTSC land]

Hello, I'm relatively new to FCP and it would be fantastic if someone could help me out.

I'm looking for an easy method to change 50i footage into 25p resulting in smooth half speed footage. (effectively each field = frame)

I have moved from Adobe Premiere and it was a very simple process:
-- In a 1080p25 project.
1. Capture the 50i material
2. Place in time line
3. De-interlace with 'frame blend' checked
4. Change speed to 50%
5. DONE!

This was in Premiere CS3 so surely there's a way to do this in FCP 7?

I have spent a lot of time searching for a solution to no avail. Am I missing something or do I need a specific plugin?

Thanks for any advice :)

If each field becomes a frame, you would need to do this on a 50p timeline. Or use Compressor to deniterlace and conform to 25p.

Have you tried optical flow within motion?
It's under the timing parameter, and usually isuch smoother than fcp. It does take a while but is worth it in most cases.

Thanks for your help, I've tried a technique using compressor and can't achieve anything other than just regular de-interlacing.

As you suggested, I'll give it a go in motion and see what results I can get.

I guess I'm right in thinking there's no easy way to do this within FCP?

Tiwards the bottom of the frame controls tab, there's a section marked duration or something similar. Set it to 50%.

I agree with the other suggestions and wish to add another. JES Deinterlacer might be your friend. It has a specific option for this:

Should be easy enough - and it's fast.

Thanks Mark, what a fantastic little tool. Quick and simple, it does the job perfectly!

I'm sure this'll help many others with the same problem.

Very much appreciated :)
