Final Cut Pro 7/Final Cut Studio 3 worth it?

Hi All.

I am on FCP 6 and Studio 2. Looking to upgrade to FCP 7 and Studio 3. Reviews? Is it significantly better than FCP 6?

Thanks for any advice.

If you need the new features then it is worth it. Features can be found on Apple's website. This is a question that each person needs to answer for themselves.

I find it more stable than FCP 6 and definitely the addition of Color to be able to read slo mo and graphics natively is definitely a nice addition.

And it's the first full upgrade that I was willing to make in the middle of a huge documentary project. It is that stable.

[Jeff Heck] "wow, upgrade in the middle and it was fine? that says a lot!"

Yep. Over 125 hours or so of 720p HD footage for a feature documentary. I talked to some buddies who upgraded first and they said the thing was so stable they were upgrading additional systems in the middle of projects.

That was good enough for me.

yes we did too, changed in the middle of some ongoing projects cause we are just nuts like that...FCS3 is rock solid. I just expected 64-bit this time around...oh well, maybe next time:) good luck!

Most of my clients are still on FCP6.0.6 and I am running FCS3. I have had no problem opening FCP6 projects in 7 including speed changes and freeze frames.

Using Color 1.5 is a huge improvement plus the roll credits etc in Motion 4 are also a big plus. I agree that it is stable although I did a complete hardware change at the time of software upgrade. Follow the rules and use a new drive, fresh OS and FCS install and keep the old drive handy if you need to go back.

FCP can't go to 64-bit until Quicktime does.

What kind of Macs are you using, Walter?

I have found this to be an unstable version in our post house. I crash about 15 - 20 a day. Mostly graphics card issues - ATI X1900 512m. The computers are Mac Pro systems, first generation Quad and Octocore, each with 8 gig of RAM, both running 10.6.3.
