[Jeff Gerst] "it's taking 40+ mins!"

That's darned good if your timeline's two or three hours long, y'know.

So what kind of footage is in this project, and why are you changing the timeline's vertical resolution to make 16x9 video?

I see what you mean.

It's remarkable how people, once they get the wrong notion in their heads, are incapable of shaking it.

It happens to me, too. But usually it's on the really big stuff: do you go to all the time and aggravation to actually mince cloves of garlic, or just give 'em a good, solid bash with the flat of your knife?
Hey, it's important, y'know?

It's kind of a long story, but I'm finishing the 3 min video as a 720x404 streaming flv. The video has screen capture from a computer with lots of text. The only way I have found to keep the text looking clean is to use these settings. I tried just about everything else!

Thx for the input, if you have any ideas.

Do this in the latest version of After Effects. You'll be good to go.
