black frames in between shots
on Jul 4, 2010 at 12:40:32 am

Hi,
hopefully someone can help me with this problem.
There are black frames in between shots in my RED online. There are no dissolves, fades or black frames in the time line.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post!

This sounds like a frame rate issue. Can you describe your workflow?

Thank you for helping me.

We edited on FCP 7 with 29.97 proxies, we took it to color 1.5, did color correction, rendered and exported uncompressed and then took it back to FCP so we can make DVDs.
The uncompressed has the black frames.

Thank you for your time,

I rhis was footage shot at 24p and left as 29.97, but cut in a 23.98 timeline, there could be problems.

It would also be helpful to know the codec of the original footage, and what you did to get the editi timeline into Color.

Hi,

the footage was cut in a 29.97 timeline then exported into a XML file, it was then online in separate system with original footage, then put into color and exported uncompressed.

uncompressed has black frames.

thank you for your time and help!

From your description, I can only conclude that the RED footage was shot at 23.976 frames/second, also known as 24pn or 23.98.

If so, you, youu should NOT have edited in a 29.97 timeline. You should backtrack and fix the timeline's frame rate.

You should also fix the proxy footage so that it matches the frame rate of the original footage, which I suspect is 23.976. If you intentionally made the proxy footage 29.97, you'll have to re-make it at the correct frame rate; simply changing its frame rate would lead to new woes.
