Mac Pro Requirements for HD Editing
on Jun 14, 2010 at 4:30:25 pm

Hi Everyone,

Im currently upgrading my edit suite as i'm starting to shoot in HD my old dual core Mac Pro lags quite a bit.

My budget will stretch to:

The 8 core Mac pro
two 2.66GHz quad core intel Xeon processor
16GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB Graphics Card

I will be inputing and outputing 1080p footage using the Kona LHi card.

My question is this: Is this spec high enough to work with this footage in FCP and to grade in color? or do I need to 'pimp up' the Mac Pro some more?

I hope someone can advise- it's a lot of money to spend!

Many thanks in advance

Neil

[Neil Gregory] "Is this spec high enough to work with this footage in FCP and to grade in color?"

more than enough.

The missing item though and a really important one, is what
storage array do you plan on purchasing?

we use editshare at the moment which has tonnes of space on it and is raided and secure I believe.

Thanks for the reply!

[Neil Gregory] "we use editshare at the moment"

Neil;

A little off the topic, but how do you like editshare?

We currently have a 20TB Rourke Data SAN connected thru fiber and managed with Command Soft's FivreJet, we are looking into editshare.

Thanks;

More than enough and excellent choice on the Graphics card for running Color.

Consider the MXO2 over the LHi. Why?

LHi has ONE SDI output. The MXO2 has two. This is handy when you switch from monitoring to outputting to a deck and you don't want to unplug and plug in constantly.

The LHi has 8 channels of embedded audio via SDI, and AES. The MXO2 has 16.

MXO2 has build in BOB, the LHi has a huge cable with all the options, and the BOB (break out box) is separate.

Sorry, I've been onlining using the LHi, and I feel very limited compared to what I get with my MXO2.

Just an another option...

What kind of monitor were you planning on using for color grading?

This is more of question for you guys concerning Neil's upgrade of new MacPro ..... isn't Apple just about to release a line of MacPro's with all new features and speed bumps ? Thought I had heard this .... just checking.

You wait for announced products. You don't wait for rumors.
