Problem w/ Canon HV40 as Capture Deck
on Jun 2, 2010 at 3:09:23 am

I just purchased a Canon HV40 to use as a capture deck for FCP and an extra camera on shoots. The import is fine, but rarely can I "batch capture" into FCP because I frequently get an "error" reading and have to try the capture again. If I have 8 items in a batch, it may take 20-25 attempts before they all get in. It seems like the deck won't lock down on the start point on the tape.
Has anyone else encountered this?
Is it a problem in FCP settings?
or is the Canon inadequate as a capture device?

Many thanks!

My HV20 has been mosty fine with only the occasional TC hiccup. Canons can be iffy with non-canon tapes. Have you run a cleaning tape thru it?

I've not run a cleaning tape through it since it is brand new. I'll give it a try.
Right now I'm using Maxell tapes. I also use Sony.

No. I meant tapes shot on non-Canon cameras sometimes don't play well on Canons. My HV20 is solid with any Canon HDV and 70-30 with HDV tapes from a Sony. Good luck

It was a mix. Some were shot on Canon (including the same HV40) and others on Sony. Same results, no noticeable difference between the two.
Thanks
