Will FCP 5.0 work on a G5 Quad Core PPC Mac?
on May 25, 2010 at 8:58:05 am

Hi,

I've the opportunity to purchase a Quad Core PPC 2.5 Ghz, will this run FCP 5.0?

I've heard of some apps not running correctly if you try and install them on either intel/PPC Macs.

Could anyone please shed any light?

Many thanks,

Richie.

Hi Richard,
My G5 started with FC 5.0 and was really stable with FC 5.0.4
Since then, have been running FC 5.1 and now runs FC 6 without issues.
I don't see any problem in the computer, but I wouldn't go to FC 5.0.

Cheers for your prompt reply Rafael!

Did you notice any increase in speed when rendering projects? Currently have a iMac G5 and recently it took approx 9hrs to render (thru Compressor) a project that was about 1.5hrs in length.

Also when trying to use Motion on the iMac it slows down to a crawl. It is for this reason I'm looking at the Quad Core, but want to make sure it will improve the workflow.

Richie.

A quad core will yield great improvement over a imac.

A G5 is a PPC machine. FCP 5 is for PPC. What would the problem be?

Many apps and plug-ins (and more every day) will not run on PPC machines. It is always necessary to read the System Requirements before buying or installing.
Performance of Motion is more dependent on the GPU rather than CPU(s). What graphics card is in the G5 you're looking at and will it meet performance specs for the version of Motion you would plan to install on it?

The main constrain I find for a G5 may be, depending of the model, the GPU.
The first models featured AGP video cards (PCI-X) shifting later on to PCI-Express.
If your G5 is of the later, it can make a big difference on managing all the GPU based software: Fxplugs, Motion, Colors, etc.

Everything released till FC 7 can works in the G5..
To find something to work with FC 5.0 will be more difficult.
