Looking for a HD Studio Monitor under US$3K
on May 13, 2010 at 3:57:31 am

I know this subject has been done to death, but the goal posts keep moving, and I'd like to get some newer information about what's out there.

I've narrowed some choices down to the Panasonic 1710, The Scientific Flanders and TV Logic 17's. 25" and above are a bit dear for me at the moment. There are post-Olympic specials on 1710's everywhere for under $2300 which is attractive. I mainly edit 720P from Varicam but occassionaly 1080. Any opinions welcomed. I'd like to keep the cost under $2,500.

Cheers,
Peter

Flanders 17". I fell in love with it, and am waiting for the day I can afford it myself. Just need to rent my SYSTEM out, not just me.

Thanks Shane,

Did you see the LM-1770W or the 1760? They use different backlights which must impact the image in some way that differentiates them.

Hi Peter, if you do go with FSI and it is going into an edit suite save the $200 and get the LM-1760W. The LM-1770W has some big advantages for field use (weight, power consumption, 12VDC instead of 24VDC, smaller chassis), but for an edit suite most people have a hard time distinguishing any real picture quality differences between the two units.

Thanks guys, so you think both the Flanders will be a better choice than the Panasonic LH1710? Just playing elimination....

The 1760. But when I buy, I want the 1770. I saw that at NAB, in bad lighting. Looked good.

I've got one of the Panasonics, ex broadcast company. Its great, good clarity, all the bits you need but it is only 17" but is big always beautiful? It goes a few frames out if I view at 1080 but at 720 it fine, got mine for £ 700 on an auction. it was the best I could get without spending a small fortune which I didn't have.
