G RAID mini and FCP
on May 9, 2010 at 4:34:16 pm

Hi! I'm setting up a new Final Cut Studio system, FCP v7. I have a MacBook Pro with 2.66 Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB internal hard drive and a 1TB external G-RAID mini drive. My project is shooting on tape, HDV, 1080i. My question is: do I need to format the G RAID drive for RAID1 or RAID0? I know for tapeless projects redundancy is better, but I'm just not sure about projects with tape.

Any advice would be great!

Warmly,
g

I would go with RAID 0 since it's faster and gives you more storage. Be sure you are backing up your FCP project files though. You're auto save vault should be on a different drive as well.

The G-Raid mini comes Pre-formatted as nonjournaled RAID0. I have one and its great for on the go. Back up the drive to another drive for safety like a 2TB or 4TB external at your home or office. I don't like or trust portable drives with only one copy of the media. Better to be safe than sorry.
