Canopus ADVC110 with Final Cut 7
on Apr 25, 2010 at 7:41:46 pm

Hi,

I've had my Canopus ADVC110 digital converter box for 3 years now and it was working fine up until yesterday. I have it set up from my Mac to output to an external TV monitor. Suddenly, I am getting no output via RCA cables to the TV.

The blue "DIGITAL IN" light is on, but when I push the "INPUT SELECT" button, it doesn't switch over to "ANALOG IN".

I'm wondering...is it pooched?

I believe that box connects via Firewire. Have you any other FW device connected? If so, try unplugging everything from the FW buss except the 110 and see if that changes anything. Also in FCP, check View Menu > External Video > All Frames is selected.

I've had the same experience as Tony. Works every time.

John -- No other firewire ports are plugged in and I had already tried VIEW > EXTERNAL VIDEO > ALL FRAMES SELECTED. Doesn't work.

Do you see the 110 on the FW buss in the System Profiler? Have you tried a different FW cable?

When I open System Profiler, I can see the ADVC110. The "DIGITAL IN" blue light is on, which means the FW cable must be good...no?

From time to time I have issues with the same box and fcp. For me, it's been as simple as ADVC needing to be restarted. Just unplug it (I have mine powered by the FireWire so unplug that) let it sit for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

Then you can switch back and forth again and all is right with the world. Well, has been for me so far.

Tony -- tried to unplug the Canopus and shut the computer down overnight, still no luck.

I know this is silly, but the other half of the equation for me is to also try "View>Refresh A/V Devices". What this does, I believe, is re-poll the Firewire buss for compatible devices.

Often, FCP will not recognize a deck or monitor unless I "View>Refresh A/V Devices", THEN "View>External Video>All Frames".

I'm sure you've tried it already, but thought I'd throw that in.

Did you try plugging your Canopus into the front firewire ports?

Sometimes those things can be finicky and plugging them into a different port at the opposite end of the computer will do the trick.

Thanks Derek, it worked. I should have thought to change firewire ports at the beginning. The thing is, when I switched the Canopus from back to front it worked...THEN I plugged the Canopus back into the back firewire and IT WORKED AS WELL!

Those things can be finicky, but thank you so much.
