Help! Need to convert 23.976 XDCam HD to 25fps
on Apr 15, 2010 at 2:12:34 am

I have a folder of footage shot on my EX3 that I need to convert to 25fps for a European client. There is about 2 hours of footage total.

The footage codec in FCP is 1080 x 1920 / 23.98 fps / XDCAM EX 1080p24 (35 Mb/s VBR)

I have tried the Nattress Standards Conversion demo as well as JES Deinterlacer with marginal results. I just don't have the magic formula figured out.

Has anyone had good success with Nattress Standards Conversion or JES Deinterlacer?

What were your settings?

Thanks Team Cow!

You can do this with Compressor. Set the frame rate in the tab with your encoding settings, then go to the frames tab and at the bottom, check the box that says "so all frames play at 25fps".

Deinterlacing is not required. Do you have to maintain speed with these files?

If yes then you could try conversion in Compressor using the frame controls. This has been discussed many times here at the Cow and a quick search will give you tips on the specific settings.

If speed is not important, Compressor using frame controls can be used to speed up and create Qt files @ 25 fps. This is faster and cleaner than a standards conversion as it is really just a vari speed baked into the files. Sound will change pitch + 4.1% which is around 3/4 semitone. OK for FX & atmos. A bit weird on voice and not good for music.

JES Deinterlacer is a free standards conversion tool. Does frame rate conversions like Nattress. Trouble is that both tools work but I keep getting duplicate frames ... Like a stutter step every 4 secs.

It is important that time and pitch are maintained as much of the footage is interviews.

How can I change the framerate and preserve image quality and audio sync?

You should be able to correct the pitch in Soundtrack Pro.

You must choose one or the another.
If you want to keep perfect picture you have to go through the Compressor process that have been mentioned or Conforming in CinemaTools (basically the same that Compressor does, but in two steps).
Then you will have to deal with the audio issue.
If you want to keep the original audio, you need to create in-between frames.
Try a traditional standard conversion in Compressor. Make a short test with BETTER and BEST filter in the Time Base.

Chris...

To have a pristine conversion, you really need to take your program to a post house that has a hardware ARC to convert your program properly. Software can only do so much. Hardware conversion is the only solution for this.
