Why 3 frames out of Sync on capture
on Apr 13, 2010 at 9:48:33 pm

I have been using a Mac pro with an AJA Io for the past 5 years with no problems.

We have just upgraded to a new MacPro with an AJA Io HD & FCP 7

When I capture through the AJA to ProRes it is 3 frames out of sync, very slight but noticable.

I turned of the AJA and did a straight Firewire capture and this was also 3 frames out of sync

Any ideas why?

Thanks

3 Frames is gross not slight. Audio pros agonize over sub frames. It drives me nuts that my LCD has a half frame latency and I can only compensate playback delay in frames.

[Michael Gissing] "udio pros agonize over sub frames."

Michael,

My editing mentor of nearly thirty years has always said to me that, "an edit that's one frame off is a bad edit."

I'm gonna have to call him now and tell him that he got it all wrong, that he should have said, "an edit that's one sample off is a bad edit."

[David Roth Weiss] ""an edit that's one sample off is a bad edit.""

That's a bit harsh. There are 2000 samples per PAL frame so I would say +- 500 samples for sync. For a dialog edit, yes we go right down to the sample level to fix clicks or take to edge off a plosive.

Hi David

I've checked my old system and it was set to 4 and sync issues were never a problem. Why would it be the case now?
By having it offset to 4 what does this achieve? Does it offset it on the timeline as it plays out?
