xdcam hd footage problems
on Apr 9, 2010 at 8:25:26 pm

so i was given a flash card that contained footage that is xdcam hd 720 24p shot at 120mbps. The clips are already quicktime files. When I drop a clip into the timeline and let final cut auto adjust its settings, the sequence settings read xdcam 720 60p (I guess since there is no 720 24p setting) The clip will only play back for about a second and then freeze. If I change the sequence settings to 1080 24p then the clip will play fine. But, of course, the footage is not 1080. I've noticed that if I export the clip as an animation at 24p and play it back in quicktime, everything looks fine.

Other than exporting all the footage as an animation file at 24p and then re-importing it, is there another way to properly bring this footage into final cut?

Thanks!

What version of FCP are you using? I haven't edited any XDCAM footage, but I checked the FCP7 Easy Setups and there is a XDCAM720P24 setting.

That's odd, I'm using final cut 7 also, but there is no option for 720p24. I've got 30p and 60p only.

That may have been an Easy Setup that came with our Kona. You should be able to make a custom Easy Setup that'll work. I'm not at my office or I'd copy the details of that setup. Perhaps someone else can do that.

[James Nation] "footage that is xdcam hd 720 24p shot at 120mbps"

I'am quite surprised at the bit rate (120 mbps) you mentioned as the this format is normally a maximum 35 mbps standard on the optical disk [ XD CAM HD ] and 50 mbps for [ XD CAM HD422 ].

We have been using about all XD CAM formats at our facility since Sony introduced the format, The first thing we usually do is to DL the "log and transfer" plugin from Sony :

Hope it can solve the problem and add missing setting.

thanks. I've tried that download before, but could not get it to work properly.

I forgot about about the custom presets, one question though: what should i choose as the compressor setting?

sorry for the delay. I just exported the files as an animation at 24fps as i was on a dead line.

But for future references,

the footage was shot on a panasonic p2 cam with the signal running out from sdi to a nano flash card. It was recorded at 720p24.
When i drop it in to final cut, it reads as xdcam 720p60 and the footage is very stroby. When i exported it as an animation at 24fps (was losing a lot of contrast in pro res) it looked perfect.

Like i said before, i dont have an xdcam 720p24 easy set up. When creating a custom one, i have to choose a compressor setting, i'm just not sure which one to choose.
