Stabilize first or last?
on Mar 18, 2010 at 10:49:31 pm

Hi,

I need to correct some shaky footage and have both Magic Bullet Stabilizer and CoreMelt lock&load x.

When is the best time to apply these filters to my locked-off edit? Before I start grading and adding transitions or at the end, once all the other image correction has been done?

Thanks!

It made sense at the time

before....otherwise how are you going to stabilize a shot during a transition?

Thanks! Sounds like transitions are always the last thing to apply. And it's better to stabilize before grading as well?

I've just read somewhere that smoothcam has to be applied first while MB stabilizer has to be applied last and I can't seem to find any information re: lock & load X so my head is exploding.

[Kristi Jarvis] "smoothcam has to be applied first while MB stabilizer has to be applied las"
That makes no much sense.

The last project I worked on had a lot of shaky footage and the colorist was very clear that it was better for him if I did stabilization after he graded. I don't know if that's a commonly held belief or not - this was the first time I ever stabilized clips - just my personal experience.

Both effects will work better in the raw footage.
The one you apply second will always works somehow worst.
