Exporting a 16:9 video to 4:3
on Mar 6, 2010 at 4:28:31 pm

I have a (15 min.) video shot on HD (DVCPRO HD 720p50) that the customer wants in 800 x 600 screen size. My question is, how do I letterbox the video so it comes out in that format?

I have tried exporting it using QuickTime conversion, with the options: Domensions: 800X600, and checking the option "Preserve Aspect Ratio using Letterbox".

Sure enough it produces a 4:3 format video of the right dimensions, but there is no letterbox and the image is squashed in.

Any suggestions greatly received.

Export as Quicktime (as is). Take that file into Compressor and use the controls in the Geometry Pane to do what want.

The key in the Geometry room is to add padding.

Dimensions (encoding pixels)
Frame Size: 800x600

Output Image Inset (Padding)
Top: 75
Bottom: 75

Left and right: 0

Will look wrong in Preview but will be correct for exported file on a computer.

Many thanks! That worked fine.
