Eliminating noise in the blacks
on Feb 18, 2010 at 2:29:29 am

I just got some footage back from a shoot and noticed the gain was slightly off, causing some noise within the blacks of the frame. I know there is some sort of technique to ease it a bit. Doubling up of video layers I believe, but i can't place what the effect is.

Any Help?

Here I am to the rescue again Andy...

Can you grab a frame that shows the problem well and post it here? The tools above, specifically the small icon that looks like a face with a hat, allows you to post any still image except a tiff. That would be particularly helpful, because, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Typically you would crush out the noise by lowering the blacks all the way to zero.

Arnie, there you go, jumping ahead, giving away my answer before I even had a chance to evaluate Andy's black levels.

Sorry David, I took a break and went to go see "The Wolfman", regretfully.

Here's the Jpeg. This is a totally different beast from what we were going over earlier today, I'll show the new image from turning down the blacks.

Andy,

The problem looks to be noise from the gain being cranked in the camera rather than bad black levels.

I set the black levels properly below using the 3-Way Color Corrector and there's only very subtle differences. There's a ton of noise in the mids, not just the blacks.

You could try using a de-noise plugin from Neat Video or Graeme Nattress.

Also, Instead of using the NeatVideo, couldn't i just adjust the luminance and Chroma fields?

It's vastly improved with the denoiser...
