Portable hard drive for MBP / P2

Just read something in Macworld magazine about LaCie Starck mobile hard drive, but it's USB
(they've said though it's fastest than some Firewire 800 hard drives !?).

What do you guys use? I'd use it with my MBP (15', 2.6 GHz Dual Core, FW 400, FW 800 and Express Card slot) in a P2 field workflow.

I think I read it somewhere earlier here on the Cow, someone mentioned some RAID solutions, did a search but found nothing.

Sonnet Fusion F2. It's very small and works well. Interfaces through an Esata Express 34 card. The only drawback: it needs power from either your Firewire 800 port or a wall wart. I have one very handy.

Thanks Don.

So, to use it, I'd need a Sonnet Tempo card I guess?

I noticed also that there is a Sonnet Tempo Pro which costs 3 times as much
with data transfer nearly twice as fast.

We use a mirrored RAID from G-Tech. That way when off-loading P2 data two copies are made at the same time. BTW we use another single drive to make a 3rd backup of the data. You can't be too careful! And when traveling, the RAID and separate drive are carried by different people.

I use a 1TB 2 drawer Firmtek RAID. Works great.

Do you use those mainly for offloading or for editing as well?

I believe, at least on paper, Sonnet Fusion should be fastest option,
as it is eSATA.

O the other side, if one is editing it later on other workstation, then Firewire drive is more convenient.

Am I on a right track here?

I've edited DVCProHD on a single FW 800 drive and a 2-drive RAID-0 on FW 800. So, the speed is OK with either of those. A variety of things will work. The Sonnet Qio transfer device combines nicely with the Fusion drives or other eSata drives.
