Conform 30fps h.264 vid at 44.1 to edit friendly format
on Feb 13, 2010 at 1:56:59 pm

I have some HD 1280x720 h.264 blue screen footage shot at 30fps with an audio rate of 44.1. What and how should I conform this for edit? I put a test clip into cinema tools to conform the frame rate to 29.97. That seemed easy enough, but then a noticed the audio rate changed to 44.056. How or should I be able to get the audio to 48K? Should I also change the codec to ProRes in compressor?

I would have used Compressor to convert to ProRes with 29.97fps and 48kHz audio.

I would work with the conformed file.
Forget about the sampling difference.

Sorry I've posted too fast.
I see very strange the new audio sample rate. I guess that the original was 44.1.
Conform and then transcode to Prores and 48Khz audio.
Do not convert directly in Compressor.

Yes the original audio was 44.1 hence the strange conversion. So I should conform in cinema tools to 29.97. Then take those files onto compressor to convert to ProRes and 48k? Will I have any sync issues or pitch problems with the audio?

If you go from 30 to 29'98 in Compressor you have to process all the picture.
If you Conform and transcode, you end up with the original picture pixel by pixel but in Prores instead of H264. This workflow is faster and less degrading.
You can try MPGStreamclipfor the transcoding is faster than Compressor and will do the same job.
If H264 would work well in FC, with the conforming would be enough.

[Rafael Amador] "If you go from 30 to 29'98 in Compressor you have to process all the picture. "

No you don't!

Just set the option so that the frames playback @ 29.97 in the frame controls tab (it's right at the bottom). Since you have to transcode anyway, I'd do this in Compressor and do the video and audio and conform all at the same time.

H264 Blue Screen? Wow.

Hi Jeremy,
Is the second time you tell me this.
Now I saw it.
I understand that that way Compressor makes a "conforming on the fly' before transcoding.

Yes I know H.264 Blue screen. They shot on a Canon 7D. So are you saying to do everything in Compressor? No need for Cinema Tools?

Yes to use Compressor with frame controls. The 7D is capable of shooting 1920 x 1080 at proper broadcast frame rates & 48hkz sound.

Whoever shot this should get a swift kick up the arse for shooting the wrong frame rate, pixel dimension and audio sample rate.

I know I know. Plus I'm doing this as a favor for free and it's costing me $500 to buy Primatte Keyer Pro in order to be able to pull any sort of decent key.
Any suggestion on what I should transcode to? Would an uncompressed format be best in this instance as to not introduce further degradation. The whole piece is approximately 2 min long.

One other thought and question. Do I really want to change the frame rate here? Wouldn't 30P be best or ideal for keying? Also By converting to either ProRes or whatever isn't that also going to hurt my chances of getting a good key since I'm stepping on the footage again? Is there a best codec for this scenario?
